This is definitely worthy of a journal entry. It has recently come to light that, sometime in the past week, newgrounds decided to flip its license from a noncommercial one to a commercial one. Yes, you heard that right; without warning, they just randomly decided to remove the noncommercial clause from their license. Ironically, the noncommercial protection that was originally given to songs was a mistake in the audio portal coding that they hadn't gotten around to fixing until now. It was supposed to default to a commercial license.

Ka-whaaaa?

This, needless to say, has made me very suspicious of the audio portal. ALL my stuff is noncommercial, and I don't like the fact that some company can come along and, in theory, use my stuff to make money. That’s stupid. The newgrounds rationale is that they want flash artists to make money off of their work and therefore the audio license needs to be commercial... but the artists never win anything if a flash game won a cash award and it used their music!

I'm extremely tempted to go around deleting my songs off of newgrounds. This is very disturbing and I’ve gotten pretty scared about the whole thing. What’s worse is that abruptly changing the license like this is illegal. They’re required to notify artists before they do something like that! I don't know, newgrounds might have good intentions in mind, but its actions are beginning to trigger warning signs.

Usually, I pay attention when my gut is telling me to run. Should I remove my songs from NG, or let them try and fix it? Even if they do fix it, I have my doubts; they did it once, why won't they do it again?

I gotta tell you, this is making me very nervous seeing my songs sitting there without any protection from commercial interests. Very nervous.

EDIT: They changed it back. Will be keeping an eye on it.

Well, why don't you save your songs, and then delete them?

Okay.. well, just a suggestion, because you seemed so nervous about it.

I am nervous about it. I just don't know if my nervousness is warranted or sufficient enough to have me remove all my songs. Its a pretty extreme thing to do.

My inner voice has never steered me wrong. Calm your mind and listen carefully to what it has to say.
When your inner voice isn't exactly sure of itself though, you should usually wait :P

They did change it back, so I'm just going to see what happens.

That's good that they changed it back. I totally agree that the change of the license is illegal. How people could sell something that is not theirs! I hope that DA admins aren't stupid and won't do something similar.
I'm afraid I'm not entierly clear on the differences in licenses. Clearly, the music is what you created yourself, and is copywrite to you. how exactly does thier license thing work?
